Remembering Harvey Emerson

We acknowledge Harvey Emerson (1947-51). After Harvey’s passing last year at the age of 90, we learned that Harvey had generously made provision for St Patrick’s College in his estate.

Over the past months, we have been in contact with Harvey’s cousin and former Old Boy, Bernard Wintringham (1964-67). Bernard has kindly shared photographs of Harvey with us and importantly been able to bring Harvey’s story to life. Thank you Bernard for the care and time you have taken to ensure we could learn more about your loved cousin.

Harvey Emerson was born in Wellington to Phylis and Stuart. His father was an Old Boy of St Patrick’s College 1920-21. Harvey had a challenging start to life, with his mother passing away at just 24 years old when he was a young child and he was largely raised by his maternal Aunt Edna. He was schooled at Marist Brothers’ Thorndon, before moving to St Patrick’s College.

Our archives indicate that Harvey participated in a variety of sports during his time at St Patrick’s. He was active in track and field, a rugby player and vice-captain of the 1st XI cricket team.

Upon leaving school, Harvey joined his father to work at the Bank of New Zealand where he eventually became an auditor. Banking was a lifetime career for Harvey and one that took him around Aotearoa and abroad. He enjoyed working in Fiji and Sydney and eventually retired in Auckland where he lived the rest of his life. Harvey was a car enthusiast and keen golfer.

We understand that Harvey enjoyed visiting Wellington. He would walk for hours around the city and take himself off to watch Marist St Pat’s play rugby. He remained passionate about sport all his life.

As a College, it is a regret that we did not have an opportunity to meet Harvey during his lifetime. However, we are pleased that Harvey continues to be linked to the brotherhood, through his cousin Bernard’s grandson Chase in Year 11.

We are grateful to Harvey for his gift to the College, through the Foundation, and know that it will benefit many young men in the years to come.

Rest in Peace Harvey Lewis Emerson. Sectare Fidem.
